Payroll Specialist - Temp to Hire or Direct Hire

Schedule: Full-time | Onsite/Hybrid (client dependent)
About the Role:
Ledgent Finance & Accounting is seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist who also brings HR and recruiting support experience. This role is ideal for candidates who enjoy owning payroll from start to finish while contributing to talent acquisition, onboarding, and HR operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Payroll (Primary Focus):
Process full-cycle payroll for hourly and salaried employees
Enter and audit timecards; ensure compliance with state and federal wage laws
Manage payroll adjustments, garnishments, deductions, PTO, and benefits contributions
Prepare payroll reports for accounting and management
Support year-end activities, including W-2s and payroll reconciliations
Maintain confidential payroll records with accuracy and integrity
Human Resources Support:
Assist with new hire onboarding, I-9 verification, and employee file management
Support benefits administration and communication
Help maintain HRIS data and employee records
Provide general HR support to employees and managers
Recruiting Support:
Assist with screening candidates, scheduling interviews, and coordinating hiring activities
Post job ads, manage applicant flow, and support offer letter preparation
Partner with hiring managers to support staffing needs
Qualifications:
2-4+ years of payroll processing experience
Working knowledge of ADP, Paychex, Paycom, UKG, or similar payroll systems
Experience supporting recruiting and HR functions
Strong understanding of California wage & hour laws
High attention to detail and confidentiality
Strong communication and customer service skills
Preferred:
Experience in construction, manufacturing, staffing, or multi-state payroll
Exposure to onboarding and HR compliance processes
